Rosto de Cão is the designation given to the section of the south coast of the island of São Miguel, Azores, situated in the vicinity of the Islet of Rosto de Cão, about 5 km east of the city center of Ponta Delgada and extending east to the edge of the municipality of Lagoa.
The former place of Rosto de Cão gave rise to the current parishes of Livramento and São Roque, which still retains that name in its official name which is, respectively, Rosto de Cão (Livramento) and Rosto de Cão (São Roque).
In the current language the name is now only used to designate Islet of Dog Face (which geographically speaking until it is not even an islet, but a peninsula) and sometimes the housing area that is closest to it and gave name to the Viewpoint of the Islet of Face of Dog.
The landscape value of Lugar do Pópulo promoted the planting of Pinhal, still existing today, thus fixing the only dune known on the island of S. Miguel.
From the invocation of the Hermitage of Our Lady of Deliverance derives the name attributed to this parish.
The entire neighboring area of the coast was once a large sand that always appears every time it becomes necessary to excavate the layer of arable land that covers it.
In the mid-twentieth century, Pópulo Beach benefited greatly, performing a work of landscape planning.
In the 17th and 18th centuries, the land between the population cluster of this parish and the sea were covered with vineyards, and its owners built on them summer houses with attached winery. Later, the vineyards were ruined.
In the last fifty years, a variant of the South Regional Road has been launched through these lands, making this area a privileged housing area.
