Its population density is 32.7 inhabitants/km². Situated in the east of the island, this parish is dominated by the green of the mountains and pastures and has a beautiful view of the sea. The parish is subdivided into two zones: Terra Chã and Fagundas, the latter being much less inhabited. The name of the parish comes, according to Gaspar Frutuoso, from a stream that crosses it, "writhing" during its route. The Church of Our Lady of Penha de France was built from 1871 to 1885, and the existing bell tower is reminiscent of the hermitage of the same invocation, dating from the 17th century.
