Located in the Natural Park of Serra da Arrábida, the area of Azeitão, comprises several characteristic villages, which are highlighted by the vila fresca and vila nogueira, which adopted the names of the farms around which they developed.
Vila Fresca de Azeitão grew around Quinta Fresca, where in the 19th century. XV King D. João I founded a palace, which later became called Palácio da Quinta da Bacalhoa, due to the nickname given to one of its owners, and this name remained to this day.
Vila Nogueira de Azeitão, in turn, graduated around Quinta da Nogueira, owned by D. Constance, wife of King D. Pedro (17th century). The village developed and was elevated to the category of town and county seat in 1786, a category it lost in 1855.
In this pleasant region and of great natural beauty have fixed summer residence several noble families that here founded quintas and mansions worthy of note such as Quinta das Torres (now transformed into Estalagem) and the Palace of the Dukes of Aveiro, built in pure Renaissance style.
A visit to Azeitão should also be the opportunity to taste the excellent products of the region such as cheeses, famous pies and wines, which highlight the table wines of the variety "Piriquita" and Moscatel de Setúbal.
About the Natural Park of Serra da Arrábida (813 characters): The Natural Park of Serra da Arrábida is magical – it starts at Cabo Espichel and runs to the palmela cliff, always on the edge of the Atlantic. It is a tour that never tire with nature charms, historical and archaeological.
Setúbal Bay, home to a community of lively dolphins, reveals idyllic beaches to us and, at every step, moments of wonder. In the past, it was protected by a system of forts – many were converted into museums, inns and one even in hospital.
Since time immemorial has been a blessed place. In the Islamic world, hermits lived here in spiritual improvement and simultaneously watched the border – it is from this time that the name Arrábida comes from.
