Covilhã is a portuguese city belonging to the district of Castelo Branco, in the province of Beira Baixa, statistical region of the Center and sub-region of Beiras and Serra da Estrela. It is the door of serra da Estrela and has 33 692 inhabitants (2021) in its urban perimeter formed by five parishes: Covilhã and Canhoso, Teixoso and Sarzedo, Cantar-Galo and Vila do Carvalho, Boidobra and Tortosendo. It is the headquarters of the municipality of Covilhã with 555.60 km² of area and 46 457 inhabitants (2021), subdivided into 21 parishes. The municipality is bordered to the north by the municipalities of Seia and Manteigas, to the northeast by Guarda, to the east by Belmonte, to the south by Fundão and to the west by Pampilhosa da Serra and Arganil. It is the land of the wool industry, of a worker nature, birthplace of discoverers of five hundred, today a city with public university. The city of Covilhã is situated on the southeast slope of serra da Estrela and is one of the most important urban centers in the region along with Coimbra, Aveiro, Viseu, Figueira da Foz, Guarda, Castelo Branco, etc. Its urban core extends between 450 and 800 m of altitude. The highest point of Mainland Portugal, the Tower (1,993 m), belongs to the parishes of Unhais da Serra (Covilhã), São Pedro (Manteigas), Loriga (Seia) and Alvoco da Serra (Seia), being included in three municipalities: Covilhã, Manteigas and Seia,[7] but is about 20 km from the urban core of Covilhã, being the Covilhã, therefore, the portuguese city closest to the highest point of Mainland Portugal. It has been a city of its own characteristics for centuries, combining interesting facts of portuguese reality. In a study prepared in 2007 by expresso newspaper, on the quality of life in Portuguese cities, Covilhã occupies the 14th position, standing ahead of the other cities in the interior of the country.
