The population density is 125.1 inhabitants per km². It is located at the western end of the island, about 30 kilometers from the island's capital, Ponta Delgada and about ten from the Ferraria bathing area. It is at an altitude of 16 to 30 meters above sea level, being a kind of large fajã. The rest of the parish is much higher (Pico and Lombas) with altitudes between 140 and 190 meters. The Monasteries have a road that allows the connection to Ponta Delgada, both by the South and by the North, as well as to the city of Ribeira Grande. The rainfall rate is among the lowest on the island. The soil is very productive, perhaps because it is the youngest on the island, with almost 600 years only.
