The cave is or was also known by the designations of "Caves of Mexilhoeirinha", "Furnas dos Mouros", "Gruta do Algar", "Gruta da Mexilheirinha", "Gruta de D. Afonso Henriques" and "Furnas da Mexilhoeira da Carregação", with the designation "Ibne Ammar" being generalized from the 70s of the twentieth century, in honor of Abú Bacr Muhammad Ibn Ammâr, Arab poet and governor who may have been born in Estômbar, a town near the caves (the first references to this designation seem to come from the early 60s).
