The Parish of Loivos da Ribeira was extinguished in 2013, as part of a national administrative reform, having been added to the parish of Tresouras, to form a new parish called Union of Parishes of Loivos da Ribeira and Tresouras, of which it is the headquarters. The Parish of Loivos da Ribeira extends over an area of about 2.53 km² and between the valley of the Teixeira River, just before it flows into the Douro River, in the place of Ermida.It faces to the north and east with Tresouras; to the south, with Frende; and to the east with Santa Marinha do Zêzere,From the top of the neighboring town of Tresouras, it is possible to obtain an extended panoramic view of Loivos da Ribeira, which occupies the lower part of the valley, open and sprawling. The patronage of the Church of Loivos da Ribeira belonged to the morgado of the Chapel of Senhor das Chagas, who belonged to the house of the Palace. The patronage was later passed to the House of Távora, who had their coat of arms sculpted over the arch of the Chapel. This coat of arms, like all those that belonged to that family, was chopped up following the Trial of the Távoras.As inquiries of 1258 bear what seems to be, so far, the oldest reference to Loivos da Ribeira "Samcte Marie de Lobos" (Inq. 1165 Cfr. 1193). In 1320, in the List of Churches of the White Book of the Cathedral of Coimbra (cf. H III. 622), it appears as "Ecclesiam de Louhos". In a manuscript in the Vatican Apostolic Library (Col 179.126) dated 131, it appears as "Ecclesia of Lauhas". An interesting reference from 1530 (Archivo Histórico Portuguez; VII. 246) reads as follows: "Logar dArrufe faz na freguesia Darvys da Ribeira". The place of Arufe still exists today.
