The parish of Calhetas is about 11.4 kilometers from the city of Ponta Delgada and 9.1 kilometers from the seat of the municipality to which it belongs, the city of Ribeira Grande. The name of this parish comes from the reefs and other pebbles that stand out on its seafront. Gaspar Frutuoso described it as follows: From Rabo de Peixe to a third of a league, there are some coves at some points and stone reefs, in which he takes a lot of fish from cast nets and good fishing is done. The exact data of its settlement are not known, however, it is believed that it dates back to the fifteenth century. The parish church of this parish dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Boa Viagem, acquired its current appearance in 1830, when the primitive church became too small. Calhetas celebrates its patron saint on the fourth Sunday of September.Another building of interest in the parish is the monastery of Nossa Senhora das Mercês. This building, from the twentieth century, houses cloistered Poor Clare sisters who dedicate themselves to contemplation and pious work. According to a note by Carreiro da Costa, tea would have started in São Miguel with the arrival around 1820 of some seeds brought from Brazil by Jacinto Leite, who used them on his property, in Calhetas.
